Figure skating is one of my life-long passions. I have been skating ever since I can remember. But what makes skating such an important part of my life? Now that I am in college, it can be hard to find room for activities I once loved, but I am determined that skating will not be left in the dust.

One of the options for the Honors Experiences in the University Honors Program is to complete a Self-Designed Experiential Learning Project. The proposal outlined in the document above is my plan to become a certified figure skating judge. I am so excited for the opportunity to pursue a goal such as this as a part of my college career.

Gateway to University Honors

Gateway to University Honors is the class that all first-year honors students must take. Through this class, we learn about the program requirements and opportunities for honors students. Many of the assignments were aimed at helping us explore ourselves and see how we can explore our interests at UC. Another focus of the class was to learn the importance of reflecting and to understand the various methods of reflecting.

Because of the class, I better understand the requirements of the University Honors Program, as well as the meaning of being an honors student. Being an honors student is about being engaged and active in learning, pursuing our own unique passions and interests. Part of being active in learning involves reflecting both during and after our experiences about what we have learned and how we feel.

Now that I have learned what it means to be a University Honors Student, I am ready to get the most out of my honors experiences. Through the active reflecting performed in class, I have a better understanding of my passions and interests, and I am ready to make the most out of my time in the UC Honors Program. My first step will be to use my mock self-designed proposal as a real experience to pursue my passion of figure skating.
